Nesting box for birds - where to hang it?

I have already written about nesting boxes here several times.

I'll say it again, it's worth hanging the boxes in our gardens. It's really fun to be a voyeur (I hope the birds will forgive us) of bird life. It's the perfect art of being attentive to us.... in fact, the sight of birds roosting at the nest box shows us that there are unique and beautiful situations that happen in nature.

Today 4 ordered nesting boxes came to us - what a wealth :) the boxes have different shapes and holes. I am very happy because so far in the garden we had only one nest box with a small opening of about 2,7 cm. It is hung in a unique place I can see it exactly from my office window. This year we cleaned it decently and nailed it so as to repair what was already moving - after years a little bit of it was gone, well, and we had to clean the house for new tenants.

Where is the best place to hang a nesting box?

- In a place that is quiet and away from people - although even this is not a rule, because our box hangs in such a place where I often stay outside. Of course hung at a great height but close to people. Always the booth is chosen as a breeding place by mazurs.

- In a shady place, certainly not in full sun

- distances between the booths min. 30 meters from each other, in the case of sparrows and starlings about 2 meters

- it is best to hang the box at a height of about 4 meters - you can also higher. If you have cats at home remember to hang the boxes at such heights and in such places where cats can not find the box.

- The nest box can not hang on the top of the crown of the tree :) but I do not think anyone has such ideas :)

- if we do not have trees a good place will be a hedge, a place on buildings, under the rafters

What is the best time to hang the nest box?

The best time to do it is between autumn and winter.

Remember to clean the nest boxes regularly - preferably in autumn and winter.

Let's also remember about the winter nests of mazuruses - don't remove them!

During the winter in our nesting boxes can spend the night : nuthatch, praying mantis, rich tit, and even woodpecker.

Well, and as I mentioned - watch out for cats and martens. We only have cats, but I know that many of you also have martens. A good way and protection is to install a metal collar above and below the shed, a good idea is to buy a bird repellent, spikes (of the more drastic methods), or extend the entrance hole to the shed in the form of such a chimney so that the marten can not put his paw there comfortably.

BOTS IN THE BOX for which birds:

2.8 - 3 cm tree warbler, flycatcher, praying mantis, pine tit

3,3 - 3,5 cm richard, warbler, sparrow, praying sparrow, nuthatch, curlew, mourning flycatcher and white-throated flycatcher, penduline tit and titmouse

4,7-5,0 cm - starling, woodpecker, , curlew, owl

8,5 cm - jackdaw, crake, hairy,

over 11 cm - 15 cm tawny owl, goldeneye, partridge, Ural owl.

We can buy a ready-made box, but we can also make it ourselves. The best building material is wood :)

I hope I have encouraged you to assemble a nesting box.
