How to fertilize potted plants? Practical advice

Garden soil has the ability to regenerate, because it is constantly enriched by plant and animal organic matter and all kinds of microorganisms. The potting substrate does not have such possibilities. So how to properly fertilize potted plants

Signs that your flowers need fertilizer:

yellowing leaves that start to fall off

growth retardation,

Fertilizers for potted flowers

The most important macronutrients that plants need are nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Fertilizers with an increased amount of nitrogen are used for green plants. It perfectly supports the proper course of the photosynthesis process and increases the growth of green mass. In turn, phosphorus and potassium are necessary primarily for flowering and fruiting plants. Both elements contribute to the color, size and strong root system, which helps the plant to withstand the stress of growing flower buds or fruits.

In addition to macronutrients, it is also good to support plant growth by adding micronutrients such as iron, zinc and copper. Flowers do not require these ingredients in significant amounts, but their addition will have a positive effect on the condition and appearance of plants.

Types of fertilizers for potted plants

The basic division, thanks to which we can divide fertilizers for plants, is:

organic fertilizers,

mineral fertilizers.

In addition, fertilizers are available in various forms, so you can choose the formula that best fits into your plant care plan. In the offer of garden shops you will find granular and liquid fertilizers, as well as fertilizer sticks and plugs.

ORGANIC FERTILIZERS

Their biggest advantage is that they are ecological and safe for the environment, because they are made of animal and plant products. Used regularly, they significantly improve the structure and quality of the soil. Another advantage is the fact that these fertilizers are difficult to overdose, making them ideal for novice gardeners.

However, organic fertilizers have a relatively slow effect, so they will not work when the condition of the plant requires sudden and quick intervention.

An example of an organic fertilizer is biohumus, formed as a result of digesting organic matter by California earthworms. As a result of the whole process, they saturate the substrate with microorganisms that multiply in their digestive tracts, having an extremely positive effect on the proper growth and development of plants.

Manure is also an organic fertilizer. Contains micro- and macroelements enriching the substrate with organic matter. It helps to maintain moisture, maintain proper structure, aerate the soil and prevent its erosion.

MINERAL FERTILIZERS

It is worth remembering that in the offer of gardening shops there is a huge amount of various types of mineral fertilizers, divided not only by form, but also by composition. We distinguish single-component, multi-component and specialized fertilizers that are intended for specific flower varieties.

GRANULAR FERTILIZERS

It is used relatively rarely, depending on the recommendations on the product label. For most potted plants, this type of fertilizer is applied once a year, usually in spring. The appropriate amount of granulate is mixed with the substrate or gently sprinkled on the plant on the soil surface. This type of fertilization is convenient because the granules dissolve gradually and evenly, providing the plant with the necessary nutrients for a long period of time.

STICKS, FERTILIZER CAP

Their use is extremely quick and convenient. It is enough to apply them to the substrate, usually around the root system of the plant, where they will be able to start their activity. The choice of this method reduces a lot of time needed for systematic plant care. A single application is enough for plants for several months, so you do not have to worry about frequent and problematic fertilization.

LIQUID FERTILIZERS

They are a convenient alternative to solid fertilizers. They are easy to mix and apply. The fact that they do not have to dissolve allows plants to easily and quickly absorb the necessary nutrients from the soil. They can be administered throughout the growing season of the plant, even every few days, because in the case of liquid fertilizers there is a small risk of overfertilization of the substrate. Therefore, they are safe to use even for inexperienced flower owners.

Follow the instructions on the label

When using mineral fertilizers, it is important to carefully analyze the product label, which includes the manufacturer's recommendations and notes. It is worth remembering that these fertilizers differ in composition and action, and their inappropriate dosage or storage may harm the plants or reduce the effects of the preparation.

Remember that too much and poorly selected fertilization is more dangerous for the plant than its complete lack.

Symptoms of overfertilization of potted plants

dark green, intense color and overly fleshy stems of green plants

drying leaf tips,

loss of flower color and even browning,

inhibition of plant growth and development.

In the case of over-fertilization of the plant, it is worth rinsing its roots under running water to get rid of excess substances deposited on them. Then replace the soil and position the plant, carefully protecting the roots. In most cases, the plant should start to recover within a few days.
