Sowing annual flowers step by step

Annual flowers are ideal for growing in containers on terraces or balconies, but they will also beautifully decorate a garden discount. You can usually enjoy their view from summer, and sometimes from spring, until the first frost.

An annual plant (therophyte) undergoes its entire development in just one growing season. This means that when frosts appear, the plant begins to die. Difficult wintering conditions are able to survive only the seeds of annual flowers produced by the plant, which, when properly stored, can be used in the next year. An interesting fact is that some of the plants are treated as annuals only in our latitude. In warmer countries, they are able to survive even several seasons. Mainly due to favorable environmental conditions.

When and how to plant annuals

Annuals can be sown in two ways:

• directly into the ground

• grow from seedlings

CULTIVATION OF ANNUAL PLANTS FROM SEEDLINGS

Seedling is the sowing and growth of new plants in controlled conditions, ensuring the right temperature, amount of light and moisture, and then planting it in the target place. Seedlings can be prepared from January to April, depending on the needs and the length of the growth period of the selected plant. How to grow a seedling yourself?

You can find special containers for seedlings in garden stores. You can also use pots, litter boxes and even yogurt packaging available at home for this purpose. Pour the growing medium (seedling soil or universal soil) into them, spread evenly and gently tamp.

Sow the seeds on the prepared substrate. Press the smallest of them gently into the soil, and cover the larger seeds with a layer of substrate.

Water the seedling prepared in this way, preferably with a spray bottle, so as not to wash out the planted seeds.

Cover the seedling with transparent foil and place it in a bright and warm place (approx. 18-20°C).

After a period of about 2-3 weeks, young seedlings should be pierced, which means transplanting them to larger pots. Quilting will significantly strengthen the root system and allow the plant to develop properly. If the seedling container is large, you can also break the seedlings so that they do not grow too densely.

SOWING SEEDS OF ANNUAL PLANTS INTO THE GROUND

If you plan to sow flowers in the garden, it is worth preparing the soil in advance. Manure, delivered to the soil in the fall, will work best for this purpose. Also before sowing, you can improve the substrate with compost or special fertilizers that will enrich the soil with valuable nutrients. The substrate prepared in this way is enough to weed, loosen and water.

Sowing seeds into the ground should be carried out at a time appropriate for a given species. Flowers resistant to spring frosts, i.e. cornflowers, damask black cumin or garden larkspur, can be sown at the end of March. However, most species of annual plants do not tolerate spring frosts well, so it is safer to start cultivation only at the turn of April and May. Cultivation directly into the ground is much less labor-intensive, but you have to take into account the impact of unfavorable weather conditions. One-year-old flowers are perfect for composing a backyard flower bed or for decorating the border of lawns or paths.

The position where you plan to sow annuals should be bright and warm and sheltered from the wind. Sow the seeds in shallow (about 1 cm deep) holes, not too densely so that the flowers have enough space necessary for proper development.

Seeds of annual flowers

The right time to buy seeds and the necessary gardening tools is the autumn and winter period, because then all the necessary items are more easily available and much cheaper. It is best to buy seeds of annual flowers from reliable sources, such as garden shops or flower nurseries. Before buying, it is worth checking the expiration date of the seeds for sowing.

Experienced gardeners can also obtain plant seeds from their own crops. They should then be properly stored until re-sowing.
